Monday 6th May - Holywell Music Room

Note unusual time

4:00 p.m.  "The Limits of Knowledge: is there room for God in a Scientific Universe?"

Professors: Russell Stannard (Open University) & Carlos Frenk (Durham)

The Large Hadron Collider and the world's largest telescopes have allowed us to construct a a "Standard Model" of particle physics which, in conjunction with current cosmological theory, successfully describes the Universe from a fraction of a second after the Big bang to the present day. This astonishing success was recently crowned with the discovery at CERN of a "Higgs-like" particle that was the missing component of this Standard Model.

Are there limits to the extent that we can continue to unveil the mysteries of the Universe, either in practice or in principle? Do such limits allow for a role for a Divine Being, and, if so, how and what? Our speakers will present their views and lead a general discussion.
